About St. John's Part in MA's Pantry
St. John's is an active partner in MA's Pantry. Begun in 1983 by five member congregations of the Hilltop Ministerial Association, this program is one of the oldest food pantries in Allegheny County. It was started as a response to the high unemployment levels and extensive economic hardship in the community. This was a result of the decline of heavy industry in the Mon Valley. Unfortunately there continues to be a real need for food assistance in our community.
Currently, St. John's members participate with food collection and distribution, and serve on MA's Pantry Board. MA's Pantry serves between 150 and 200 families living in North Versailles and East McKeesport. A high percentage of the recipients are elderly, children, and disabled persons. It is staffed entirely by volunteers from the participating congregations and the community.
MA's Pantry is an active affiliate of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and is designated a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. It is supported by contributions of food and cash from members of the Hilltop Ministerium Congregations, residents of the community, the United Way, retail food stores in the community, grants, and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
